Information and computer technology is nowadays the dominant implementation tool in automation. Automation systems used in manufacturing and process industries as well as the embedded control systems for various production and work machines are mostly based on computer systems. Integration of automation systems with other control and information systems, like production management, product planning, condition monitoring and maintenance management etc., is a clear trend now and in the future.

Operations inside an enterprise and between enterprises are developing more and more networked. This has been enabled by the use of modern information and telecommunications technologies. A successful automation or information system is based on good knowledge of the operational environment and user needs. The share of software work is often crucial in the whole development or implementation project. Therefore the use of systematic modeling, specification and implementation methods and tools is in the key position.
